Deliciously Warm

I meet the nicest people in the ocean, and today was no exception.

We were wondering what this reddish fish was. We saw lots of them, but mostly hiding in holes. Any ideas?

The ocean continues to feel deliciously warm. Mmmmmm.

I Am (mostly) Human

My DNA has now been sequenced and it turns out that I am more human than I had expected. Although I am more Neanderthal than most people (2.9% of my DNA is Neanderthal) all the rest appears to be Homo Sapiens. Not what I expected at all (well, except for the homo part, of course).

Try sequencing your own DNA. The test is $99 (plus a couple dollars for shipping) and took just under two months. I learned what my biggest hereditary health risks are and lots of other interesting stuff as well. Check it out at: https://www.23andme.com/

Dancing with the Clouds

I worked above the clouds today. My job was to photograph a new telescope on top of Mount Haleakala and fortunately the clouds stayed just a few hundred feet below. I love watching the way the clouds swirl and dance with the mountainside and the sunlight.

Usual Suspects

There were lots of the usual suspects on my ocean swim this morning.

Just a couple quick snaps on yet another perfect day in paradise.

Warm Summer Play

I love, love, love the warm summer ocean swims.

This is when the Maui Pink Cap Swimmers become playful - no longer is it necessary to keep going non-stop in order to keep warm. And today was one of those fun summer swims.

Sweet Hello

A few of Maui's Spinner Dolphins briefly swam past me this morning on their way to the Kamaole Beach Parks (at least that's where they told me they were headed).

It was sweet of them to say hello.

Where is Everybody?

The beach was exquisite this morning; small waves lapped the shore and a cool breeze wafted by. So why was it almost deserted? Especially since this is a holiday weekend.

I think I'll go back out and enjoy it a little bit more.

Crazy for Leaves

One of my swimming buddies brought tree leaves with her on our ocean swim this morning, and it was a good thing she did.

Spinner Dolphins adore playing with floating leaves and this morning they were over the moon with joy as they had a large selection to choose from.

Lovely Softness

What a perfect morning for a walk. A gentle north breeze kept me cool under a hot summer sun, while fluffy clouds formed around the mountain peaks. Exquisite.

Summer is definitely here, but with a lovely softness. I love living on Maui.

Summer Snowstorm

There were so many gazillions of micro-organisms in the water this morning that it was like swimming through a snowstorm.

Except for the cold. Summer has come early to Maui this year.

Can't Take a Bad Picture

This is one of my favorite spots on my morning walks. And what makes it even more scenic is when a family sets up their beach umbrella exactly where these guys did today. I couldn't resist taking multiple photographs, both as straight-up photographs and using my camera's water-color setting. The location is so perfect that I couldn't take a bad picture.

Stumble Across

One of the fun things about swimming through underwater caves...

...is never knowing what you may stumble across inside them (not to worry, today it was just my buddy, Bruce).

Average Day

Just your average day at the beach. This is one of many beaches I pass on my morning strolls.

Glorious Waves

This morning's ocean swim started out innocently enough...

...that is, until the wind built and the waves began crashing down on our heads.

What glorious fun. Let's do it again.

Notification

What a perfect day for a swim out to the cove called the aquarium. The ocean was unusually flat and calm, and there wasn't even a breath of wind. I guess the fish must have been notified that I was visiting, because they were there in unually large numbers. I love living on Maui.

Too Much Color

Maui's Jacaranda trees still have yet to explode with blueness, well, most of them haven't. So I thought I would ignore color altogether and make it a black-and-white day, but I couldn't do it.

There is too much glorious color in this world and I simply am unable to ignore it. So here are a few shots from Upcountry this morning.

Watching the Watcher

This Sea Turtle was thoroughly engrossed in watching the fish swim by this morning. Which, of course, caught my attention, and I ended up spending lots of time watching the turtle watch the fish.

Hooray for Summer

Sure the water was a bit murky this morning, but who cares? Adventures and turtles were in abundance this morning. Plus - and most importantly - the water was warm. Hooray for summer!

Sometimes Human

I meet some of the nicest people on my ocean swims. And sometimes they are even human...

Upcountry Blues

I keep making trips Upcountry in hopes of seeing the Jacaranda trees in full bloom. They keep trying, but aren't quite there yet. When it happens, the sides of the road vibrate with solid walls of blue.
